Blizzard’s lawyers have apparently been busy this month as the cease-and-desist letters for World of Warcraft rogue servers and emulators just keep on a-comin’.
A few weeks back, we covered the news that Blizzard is suing WoW rogue server Turtle WoW over copyright violations. Earlier this week, the Everlook rogue servers announced an impending shutdown in Europe following a C&D. Today’s contestant is Project Epoch.
Sort of.
“Multiple members of the Project Epoch team have received a Cease and Desist from Blizzard Entertainment,” admin Kaytotes says. “In compliance, we are shutting down the services that we are able to, including the website. And we are ceasing any and all activity that could be construed as marketing, distribution, or support of Project Epoch, any emulated WoW servers and any WoW client software including any Project Epoch client software or ‘updates.’ We will not be involved with or operate private servers for any Blizzard or Activision games.”
The website is indeed shut down, but what you might notice is that the admin doesn’t actually say the two Epoch servers are closing, only that the relevant staff are washing their hands of the situation. That’s because the servers were already apparently in the process of moving under the umbrella of an allegedly-Russian-hosted server set called Ascension. This has not stopped the Discord from descending into a swirl of vitriol and toxic hate speech (apparently some people really believe emurunners should stand firm for pirate server communities while Blizzard slowly ruins their lives).
The Ascension devs have already announced a “full roadmap” of content for Epoch, but either way, it’s clear Blizzard is on the prowl – and we have a pretty good idea why.
