Everyone here has heard of fast fashion, right? It’s a business model whereby vendors are cranking out endless streams of low-quality clothes that are super on trend, basically delivering exactly what the market wants when it wants it, cheaply. And of course, most of it ends up in landfills to be replaced with the next round of cheap trendy junk built on the backs of underpaid labor overseas. It’s a market strategy cropping up in everything from music to makeup.
But does it affect games too? That’s what I’ve been wondering, and I’d say it does, just on a slightly longer time scale. We’re constantly inundated with cheap trend-chasing junk in gaming, even if we don’t buy it. Right now, it’s extraction games, but before that it was battle royale and mobile. In the MMO world, MOP’s Eliot even came up with a name for the fast fashion MMOs that stream across the Pacific Ocean and are never intended to last: temports.
Do you agree we are subjected to these kinds of games? Which MMO best personifies the fast fashion of gaming?
