Skateboarding sandbox MMO Skate begins free-to-play early access today with a roadmap into next year

Last month we checked in on Skate (I’m not typing it the way it’s actually titled because it gives Bree agita), a free-to-play MMO sandbox where players… well… skate around a fictional city in three month-long seasons, snapping up music tracks and looking pretty nice while doing it thanks to its customization features. In that report, the developers at Full Circle were remarking the game’s upcoming early access soon, but now there’s a full date: Literally today, September 16th.

The release date was announced a couple of weeks ago with a new trailer alongside a development roadmap for its first three seasons, each of which will bring new areas to skate in, new challenges, seasonal events, and brand partnerships in case players want their characters to be rolling billboards.

The first season will launch in October with seasonal events like Skate-O-Ween, the first season pass, and quality-of-life improvements; Season 2 begins in December with a new co-op game mode, new tricks, and in-game voice chat for parties; and Season 3 “and beyond” promises player-created skate parks, new game modes, leaderboards, and open world collection of stuff. What stuff? We don’t know yet.

Another video provides a general overview of the game from the devs, talking up its cross-platform and cross-progression features, its generally more approachable gameplay and control scheme (though PC players will need a controller), and the four different neighborhood zones that make up the playable city of San Vansterdam each filled with a variety of challenges to complete. The devs also elaborate on the battle pass system, which unsurprisingly comes with a free and paid track, while spending earned game currency to unlock cosmetics will be dependent on the player and not based on a linear path.

We’ve also got a bunch of patch notes that detail some nerfing to the speed of XP earnings (playtesters were “crashing through the game,” apparently), a long list of bug fixes, and a nearly similarly long list of known issues. There’s also a list of PC specs to ensure potential players’ rigs can manage the game’s F2P EA. LOL WTF BBQ.
