We all take breaks from our main games from time to time for any number of reasons, and while that might rustle the jimmies of some of the bigger MMORPGs, one of the lead devs of the upcoming Subnautica 2 isn’t really fussed if players just peek in to its delayed early access release because the game isn’t meant to keep hooks buried in long-term the way MMO players are accustomed to.
In an interview with Edge Magazine, designer Anthony Gallegos expressed his thoughts about players dipping in and out of Subnautica when it suits them:
“There are a lot of genres where players are very monogamistic. A lot of players are like ‘I only play this shooter’. MMOs, same way. […] If I see people play through all the content of Subnautica and then they leave for a little bit until we do a content patch, that doesn’t alarm me, because I know what they’re doing. They just move from one to [another] with their friends, or by themselves. But they play them all.”
One would argue that the “monogamism” being referenced by Gallegos isn’t a hard and fast rule, especially in the days of free-to-play MMORPGs and multiplayer games, to say nothing of the fact that Final Fantasy XIV’s own producer and director Naoki Yoshida himself has said taking a break is a good thing. Of course, the other side of the coin is FOMO maneuvers like battle passes and seasons cropping up in titles.
Regardless, if you feel bad about dipping occasionally into Subnautica, don’t be; at least one person is totally cool with it.
