As Gamigo fiddles around with whatever it’s cooking in former Trion MMORPG RIFT, it’s also still maintaining former Trion MMORPG Trove, and this week we’ve had several bits to nibble on.
For starters, Gamigo released its September community letter, complete with an anniversary infographic that gives a few clues about the state of the game: More people on PC than console engaged with the piñata party, people died 3.5M times during the events, and the top classes of late have been Shadow Hunter, Boomeranger, and Knight. (Trove classes are fungible, so you can move between them and level them all at will.)

The letter also discusses plans for crystal 5 rings “further down the road,” an expansion of badges for loyalty points, and the current content priorities, as players wanted to know why player-requested content takes a back seat to monetization. Gamigo actually disputes that perception even as it acknowledges it still has to pay the bills.
“The Tutorial Update was designed to help new players get into the game more easily. The Trials of Luxion update introduced a new game mode with enemy density like never before,” the team says. “With the Block Party patch, we added a new tier of gems and a feature to make melee classes more competitive with ranged, being our answer to player feedback. Our updates regularly include ways to ease the progression via the store; we are a free-to-play game, and monetization is necessary to keep the servers and ongoing development running. However, monetization is never the starting point of our design process. Updates are first built around gameplay improvements and new features, while monetization is layered in afterward to support the game’s sustainability.”
Finally, this week the game has kicked off its latest event in conjunction with the aforementioned Block Party update. Block Party adds a “combat block” system that reduces one-shot kills (of the player), new mystic gems, and a buffs for the Gunslinger, Chloromancer, and Vanguardian. The event is perfectly ridiculous in true Trove tradition as it pits the Highlanders against the Candorians, healthy food vs. junk food. It’s really a fight over grapes.
“As players progress through the event, they’ll learn the main point of contention at the center of the feud: grapes. The Highlands claim grapes are a healthy snack, while the Candorians preach them as a sweet treat. Trovians are then faced with the ultimate crossroads: which side of the food pyramid do they think grapes land? They’ll feed grapes to the denizens of whichever side they choose, with the ultimate decision being determined by a good old-fashioned vote. Casting a vote produces a Proof of Vote, which is needed to craft this event’s rewards.”
See? Ridiculous, just as it should be.
