RuneScape promises harsher penalties against gold buyers, OSRS introduces more poll-driven updates

The seemingly endless problem of real-money trading (RMT) in both RuneScape and Old School RuneScape has once again risen like the boil it is on the skin of the MMORPGs, and while a warning about the practice shared on both games’ websites does yet more finger wagging like a disappointed London bobby, it also heralds a sterner stance for those who engage in RMT on both sides of the market.

“Historically we’ve treated the buyers more leniently than the sellers when issuing penalties for real world trading. As part of our clamp-down on those gold-farming bots and the harm they do to RuneScape, we’re now taking a harsher line against players caught buying gold from them,” Jagex points out. “If you’re buying your gold that way, please don’t expect to get away with just a warning; our agents will issue bans, temporary or permanent depending on the situation, even for first offenses, as well as confiscating items from the offenders.”

As for when this will go down, no date is given, but it’s perhaps best that players assume this is immediately in effect. And fairly warned be ye.

Meanwhile in OSRS, this week’s patch has yet more updates powered by Poll 85 responses including the ability to repair a long-broken bridge (provided characters have the right skill line level and materials), changes to the Fremennik Sea Boots, permanent ropes at Baxtorian Falls after a quest is completed, and the end of disease affecting herbs planted at Harmony Island, among other things. The game is also applying some mobile updates and a community event forming in Discord this Friday, September 19th.
