MMO studios often talk a big game when it comes to the importance of their updates, but in the case of this week’s patch for World War II Online (fka Battleground Europe), the hyperbole may be justified. The studio announced that Patch 1.38 “represents the single greatest code re-write” the massive war sim has received in the past decade-and-a-half.

The biggest area of improvement that this code targets is something called “prediction and smoothing,” which assists with the chaotic flow of combat to make it feel more authentic — even if the computer is giving some assist from behind the scenes.

As the studio explains, “Because the internet has delays (called latency), your computer can’t always know exactly where another soldier, tank, or plane is at the exact moment. To solve this, the game uses prediction and smoothing. Prediction and smoothing is the hidden tech that makes the massive battles of WWII Online feel smooth, fair, and immersive—bridging the gap between internet delays and real-time combat.”
