THIS IS YOUR NEW GOD, CHILDREN

Our capitalist hellscape times, in which people are encouraged to commodify their hobbies in order to make ends meet, will be getting a fresh new addition with the help of Epic Games. Come this December, players of Fortnite will be able to sell their own in-game items from their custom games.

From December 2025 through the end of 2026, players will earn 100% of the V-Bucks value from sales in their created islands on top of “engagement payouts” from item shop sales, though it won’t be a 1:1 value as Epic Games will be doing some maths. In summary, between December 2025 and December 2026, creators will be getting 74% of a cut of in-game sales, while that cut will lower down by 50% on January 1st, 2027 and onward to a total of 37% – both of which are still higher than the 25% profit share offered by Roblox. Here’s the full explainer:

“To determine the V-Bucks value in US dollars in a given month, we take all customer real-money spending to purchase V-Bucks (converted to US Dollars), subtract platform and store fees (ranging from 12% on Epic Games Store to 30% on current consoles), and divide it by the total V-Bucks spent by players. Fortnite’s average platform and store fees are currently 26% (with specific fees ranging from 12% on the Epic Games Store to 30% on console platforms). So, 50% of V-Bucks value translates to ~37% of retail spending, and 100% of V-Bucks value translates to ~74%.”

Revenue share won’t be the only thing that’s changing when this temporary payout boon goes live, as the aforementioned “engagement payout” will be adjusted starting November 1st “to better reward creators for bringing in new or reengaging lapsed players in Fortnite,” granting those creators 75% of the engagement payout pool from those returning players for the first six months.

Finally, November 24th will introduce a sponsored row in the game discovery UI, while creators will be able to set up campaigns within the creator portal on November 17th. That’s capitalism, baby!
