If you’re looking for some 3-D multiplayer sandbox piracy adventure, your choices have mostly been Sea of Thieves and Skull and Bones, but we’re here to report on a new option for those seeking that kind of vibe in the form of Salt 2: Shores of Gold, a PvE RPG set in a piratical open world with a focus on crafting, survival, and exploration, while the pirate ship serves as home base.

“This game can be as relaxing or as adventurous as you want. […] This isn’t a game with naval combat, but is focused on PVE content such as decorating your ship, going on quests, and exploring tons of unique locations.”

Developer Lavaboots Studios talks up the multitude of freely placeable ship decorations, the wide open exploration of a procedurally generated world, and activities that range from the pastoral like fishing to fighting enemies and world bosses, all while characters progress in skills and unlock more world tiers.

Salt 2 has been talking up its multiplayer aspirations when it hit early access in 2022, but only recently has co-op multiplayer been officially released in its latest patch, along with a new fishing guild, the ability to bring up treasure from the sea, and seasonal merchants, alongside a lengthy list of fixes.

As for when early access will wrap up, it’s hard to say; Lavaboots claimed a year of development, but we’re obviously well past that point now. Still, this one appears to have gotten some pretty effusive reviews by fans on Steam, and as we pointed out before, new multiplayer pirate game ahoy.
