John Smedley’s Reaper Actual on its ‘stunningly massive’ scope and ‘utility-

We reported previously about extraction MMOFPS Reaper Actual and its curated presence at this year’s Gamescom, which granted invited attendees a look at the various game mechanics and systems as it eyes an early 2026 release. Despite the event being long over, an interview from WCCFTech with Distinct Possibility’s John Smedley and Matthew Higby has offered a few additional details to note.

The first thing of note is the scale of the game world in Reaper, which Smed describes as “absolutely stunningly massive,” with plenty of buildings to scale or some to enter into, lots of sniping positions, and plenty of POIs, locations, and mission objectives that can spawn all across the map in order to give a sense that players are constantly surrounded by firefights and combat. As reported previously, the full game space can currently support up to 200, but the aim is to “get over a thousand” at some point “a little bit after launch.”

The MMO-like size isn’t just about the map either, as Higby and Smedley also talked about large-scale player features like player-to-player trading via an auction house-style system, crafting that “should feel more like something from an EVE game” in terms of its complexity and depth, and the clan system known as outfits that promises to be more in-depth than other guild systems, including larger outfit bases with more features like vehicle garages.

Another major point of note was discussion about the separate and optional blockchain version. Here Higby talks about how the devs are looking to create “NFT or crypto assets [that can] actually be utility-based as opposed to just being speculative value.” The current solution being considered is the ability to create a purpose-built base designed as a medical waystation, bundle it up as a blueprint, and sell it off as both an NFT and a useful in-game asset.

Earlier in that same portion of the interview, however, Smed also pointed out that trading between the Web3 and standard versions of the game won’t be possible, so presumably the same granted example could be done in the regular game, which once again raises the question of why this needs to be a thing to begin with when actual gamers neither want nor need it.

On the subject of imposed digital scarcity For Reasons, the interview confirms that access to a “foundation alpha” of the game will be sold on both Steam and the Epic Games Store starting Monday, September 22nd, which will be sold in very limited quantities. This is to “let up a small number of people in and actually play the game because we want players to come in and actually tell us if the game is fun, and teach us the things we don’t know about our own game,” according to Smed.
