What does the future hold for Roblox? More AI-powered force feeding, a copycat of a much larger video platform, and a world where game makers will further chase the dragon of wringing money out of a hobby at all costs. That’s the general summary of what the UGC platform unveiled at its bespoke Roblox Developers Conference last week.

A number of “innovations” were released or promised to be coming to Roblox over the coming months, leading off with an assortment of AI tools crammed in like “4D object creation, where the fourth dimension is interaction” that will generate more feature-rich model assets sometime in the fourth quarter of this year, real-time voice translation features later next year, improvements to the existing Assistant model generation tool, and more text-to-speech API additions.

Another big top reveal was the plan to create Roblox Moments, which is basically TikTok in Roblox’s walled garden: An age-restricted beta version of the tool lets users record small clips of their gameplay and edit them with a suite of platform tools, while later updates will utilize platform-specific APIs “that can help attract new audiences and drive stronger engagement and retention.”

Speaking of driving engagement and retention, the DevEx rate has been increased, letting players earn 8.5% more actual cash when they turn in earned Robux spent on their created games, which Roblox Corp calls “a significant step that reinforces the company’s dedication to fostering an economy where more creators can thrive and succeed.” Totally not child labor; surely a gift.

Other updates unveiled in the conference include a new server authority mode that protects against cheaters and other ne’er-do-wells in competitive games, improvements for the game’s engine and its avatars, and further collaborations with various toy lines, anime, and films.
